This calendar does not account for the many scattered entries in the journals and manuscripts that are not in proper sequence. Such misplaced entries will be noted at the point of their placement in the edition. The heading for each item dates the journals according to major writings; significant contents are then noted sequentially. The material is arranged by the final dated entry, thus some beginning dates will appear to be out of order. Exceptions to this arrangement will include material that is a first or rough draft, which will precede the regular journal. Thus, Clark's Field Notes will precede the finished journals (i.e., Codices A and B) that cover early portions of the time period; and the Elkskin-bound Journal will come before Codices G, H, and I. Coues's arrangement of the journal fragments (Codices Aa, Ba, Fa, Fb, Fc, Fd, Fe, Ia, La, and Lb) has been maintained, although such ordering does not fit this scheme. Other journals (such as Codices O, P, Q, and R) do not follow Coues's ordering, while Codex S (drafts of letters) has been dropped because it is not journal material. Codex T is not listed here separately but is included with other materials with which it belongs (see First Draft, January 6–10, 1806). Undated tabulated and collated material (e.g. Estimate of Eastern Indians) was probably put together by the captains at stopping places like Fort Mandan and Fort Clatsop and such undated items will follow regular journals covering those periods.
The size given for the documents is the page or paper size, with the larger dimension always given first. The covers of notebooks are usually one-eight to one-quarter inch larger. The total given for notebook pages occasionally varies from Coues's count due to his numbering of flyleaves on which the captains had written and his counting of missing sheets when they were apparent. The enlisted men's journals are listed in the order in which they will appear in this edition.
